Hello Odyssey 1-6 parents,
I hope you're all staying safe in this wild weather!
I wanted to give an update on the Integrated Learning Block season that is about to begin, especially for new families. We have a lot of fun to come this year!
ILBs (aka mini-classes) are the Friday afternoon (12:45 - 1:45pm) parent-taught classes in a range of subjects from music to math baking, computer science to cricket. The sessions run roughly by month, either three or four Fridays per session.
Our first session begins in two weeks, on October 28th with a great lineup of interesting classes! One new development we are piloting this year is an online menu for students to fill out to indicate their preferences, so you will be seeing an email from Frank Renna (today perhaps!) with a link to a google form. Please let Frank or me know if you have any troubles with the form. The students will not rank their choices but indicate their top selections, and be able to add comments to explain if there is a class they are super stoked about taking. We hope this system works well for families and for our coordinators.
We will be taking all of the google form responses from students, and assigning students to classes. You will generally find out the assignments by email a week or more before the first Friday of each session. If your students is in a class that will go off-site one or more days, you will get a permission slip to fill out for these field trips.
How about the ILB teachers? These are awesome parents who have stepped up to share their passion with the kids. We still have room for more classes! We only have about 60% of our class slots filled, so please let me know if you are interested in teaching a class! We can absolutely support you if you are new to teaching. We will also need assistants for many of these classes, so keep your eye out for emails requesting your help in this way. They are SUCH a fun way to interact with kids, and enrich yourself with new learning.
Our fall ILB coordinators are Frank Renna, Kirsten Hytopoulos, and Alyse Nelson. THANK YOU to these wonderful people - it's really a big job orchestrating all of this! I am the 1-6 ILB 'pea pod' leader, so I'm trying to keep an eye on the whole structure over the year. Please let any of us know if you have questions at any time.
We hope your kids have an awesome time in ILBs this year!
