Happy First Day of School and Volunteer Info

Hello Odyssey Community!

 

I hope all the kids had a great first day of school. I know mine were so excited to see their friends and teachers and it felt good to drop them off at a place where I know they will be looked after by so many people who know them and care about them.  One of my favorite things about Odyssey is how the school's philosophy and volunteer opportunities enable us as parents to get to know each and every child.

 

And speaking of volunteer opportunities......

 

THANK YOU to all who stopped by the sign up table at the ice cream social and sent in your Volunteer Commitment forms to let us know which projects you would like to help out with this year.  Joy and I are going to work on the Classroom Volunteer schedule over the next several days and send out a draft for you to review.  In the meantime, please save the date for *Wednesday, September 21st, 7pm* when we will be holding a Classroom Volunteer Training for all new parents who wish to volunteer in the classroom, as well as experienced parents who want a refresher.  It is especially recommended for 1/2 parents who will be helping with reading, as Anne would like to go over some information and instructions on how volunteers can help our youngest readers.

 

We will also be going over our new volunteer tracker at the parent meeting on September 8th at 6:45pm, and it is great!  You will be able to log hours through the OPTO website or through an app on your smartphone.  Many thanks to OPTO President Sarah Albee for setting it all up.

 

Additionally, if you did not fill out an online volunteer application through the BISD website last year, then it is time to renew.  For first time school district volunteers or those who last filled out an application in 2014 or earlier, please visit the BISD volunteer application link below and follow the instructions, which include watching a short presentation and filling out the form, as well as bringing in a copy of your driver's license to Michelle Hope in the school office.  After those requirements are met, you will be placed on an official approved volunteer list and you are good to go!

Finally, here are a few volunteers positions looking for the right people!  These are for events that are coming up SOON, so please let me know ASAP if you are able to step in and help out. Training is available for all jobs :)

 

HALLWAY MONITORS - The best deal in town - get 1 hour of volunteer credit for 15 minutes of your time.  Supervise students in the locker hallway as they arrive from 7:30-7:45.  Let me know which day works!

 

FORT FLAGLER (Sept. 16/17) - Too many fun jobs to mention, so just let me know if you'll be there and willing to help, and Steve will get in touch with you.

 

FORT FLAGLER ILB Teachers - Teach your fellow parents a new skill at Fort Flagler during our parent meeting and ILB planning session on Friday, Sept. 16th.

 

FALL ILB Coordinators (Nov-Dec) - Help to organize kids into classes, get permission slips prepared, assign classroom space for 2 ILB sessions.

 

AUCTION PROCUREMENT - Great way to get flexible hours while running errands in Winslow.  Drop donation forms off at a few island businesses and follow up to collect gift certificates.  So easy!
